An Old Favourite
Alternatively titled "Un Grand Classique"
For the many years we’ve visited or lived in Sydney, we’ve had a few trusty favourites where one can always rely on a great meal, relaxed atmosphere and memories of years gone by.
La Guillotine is almost an institution in the city, having survived buildings being demolished and rebuilt around it, and the many waves of culinary fads that sweep the city. But it’s always great for simple French classics done extremely well (we could even say, très, très bien!)
We’ll keep this review short and sweet. La Guillotine always delivers an outstanding soupe à l’oignon, and it’s interesting to see and taste how this changes over the years as chefs come and go. The Steak frite is one of my all time dishes, and the chef can always cook the perfect blu. The Moules marinière are a highlight, not just because of the impeccable preparation, but because the chefs know that “bigger is not better” when it comes to moules, and the small sweet black mussels are perfect for this dish.
A French meal isn’t complete without dessert, and you’ll find Tarte Tatin, Crème brûlée and some equisite French-sytle puddings to cap off your meal.
